Get to know conductor, baritone player and Yamaha Artist Margaret Antrobus
How would you characterise your instrument?
The Neo baritone has an ergonomic shape that helps the player focus on the playing rather than the physical aspect of holding the instrument. The valves have a smooth and easy action and the sound has a lovely warmth and depth.
Who was your most influential teacher and is there any advice which you still follow?
My teachers have all been amazing influences in the various stages of my life, Helga Vetaas, Kim Lofthouse, David King and Morgan Griffiths. I learnt so much from these amazing teachers but the one issue they all pressed was the importance of air flow through the instrument.
Advice for a young musician?
The most important thing about music is to enjoy it. To be able to do this, it is key to always practice the basics.
“My first experience with the Yamaha Neo baritone was when I was invited to join the Neo Brass Ensemble in 2014. Playing in a group with such amazing musicians and working with the wonderful Yamaha crew is an honour. The big sound of this baritone was a great addition to the wonderful sound of Manger Musikklag.”
About Margaret Antrobus
Margaret Antrobus is a conductor, teacher (Deputy Principal) at Manger Folkehogskole and baritone player. An experienced conductor, Margaret has conducted bands such as the “Manger Old Stars” and is a member of the conductor team for the schools brass band course. As a player, Margaret is hugely respected in the brass band community and played Solo Baritone with the award winning Yorkshire Building Society Band, as well as spending several years with Manger Musikklag. She was also a member of the Yamaha Neo Ensemble who performed at Brass in Concert.
